I had a call last week with a founder who spent $40,000 on brand identity. Custom typeface. Brand book. Color palette with 12 shades. Tone of voice document. The works.
Total social media followers: 211.
Nobody cares about your brand. Not yet. And that's not an insult. IT'S A FACT.
BRAND IS EARNED, NOT DESIGNED
You don't get to decide your brand. The market decides. Your brand is whatever people say about you when you're not in the room. And if nobody's talking about you, you don't have a brand. You have a logo.
I built my agency's brand by posting content every day for two years before I had a single client. I didn't have a brand book. I had a phone and an opinion.
The brand came AFTER the audience. After the attention. After hundreds of posts that taught people who I was and what I stood for.
WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
Stop spending money on brand. Start spending TIME on content.
Here's your actual priority list:
1. POST EVERY DAY. On at least one platform. TikTok, Instagram Reels, LinkedIn — pick one and go hard.
2. SAY SOMETHING. Have an opinion. Be specific. "Great content matters" is nothing. "You should post 3 TikToks a day even if they're ugly" is something.
3. LET THE AUDIENCE SHAPE YOU. The posts that get traction tell you who your audience thinks you are. Follow that signal.
Emma Chamberlain didn't launch with a brand strategy. She posted raw, unedited vlogs that broke every rule. The audience decided she was authentic. The brand formed around the content, not the other way around.
UGLY CONTENT THAT GETS POSTED BEATS BEAUTIFUL CONTENT THAT DOESN'T
One of our clients — a local gym — was producing these cinematic workout videos. Professional camera. Color grading. Music licensing. Each video took a week to produce.
They were getting 200 views.
We told them to stop. We told the owner to film himself talking to the camera in the gym for 60 seconds. Raw. No editing. Just talk about one fitness topic.
First one got 3,400 views. Third one got 18,000. Within two months they were averaging 12K views per video and getting 30+ new member inquiries a month from TikTok alone.
Nobody cared about the brand. They cared about the person.
DELETE YOUR BRAND GUIDELINES. PICK UP YOUR PHONE. HIT RECORD. POST IT.
